Swiss hold off Muller & Germany to join Group A foes in last 16

Breel Embolo's goal ensured Switzerland and Germany progress to knockout phase

No team has ever failed to qualify for the knockout stages with four points at a 24-team Euros

Switzerland held off a late Germany fightback to secure a 1-0 win in Basel and join their opponents in the last 16 of UEFA EURO 2024.

Breel Embolo's first-half strike proved enough for the Swiss to finish second in Group A with six points, the same as Germany, who ended their campaign with four points.

Thomas Müller spurned a late chance to equalise for Germany, who needed a win to be certain of progress, as Switzerland held on to become the first side to keep a clean sheet against Hansi Flick's team this tournament.

Switzerland will now face the Group B runners-up in the last 16, while Germany will meet the Group B winners.
